Vacations With Your Teenager

By: John J. Baker

Are you having a hard time trying to decide where to spend your family vacation? It can be hard to please everyone, especially if you'll be vacationing with fickle teenagers. Having an unhappy teenager will make for an unpleasant time for everyone so consider taking a trip that will keep your teen occupied and entertained.

Most teenagers like to visit amusement parks for the roller coasters and park food. There are many amusement parks to choose from. Try to focus on ones that have more roller coasters than kiddy rides and shows. For example, consider Magic Mountain in Southern California as opposed to Disneyland or Sea World. Many are located in or near cities of other tourist sites that will keep the entire family entertained. There are family discounts available and multiple day discounts if you're thinking of spending an entire weekend at a park; check the individual park's website for information.

Some teens are more interested in outdoor activities and adventure. Consider a white water rafting trip to get their adrenaline going. No experience is required and there are all levels available. A guide is on the raft with you to steer you in the right direction and provide for any safety concerns. Packages range from just a day trip to a full camping excursion.

First, find out what their interests are. Don't assume you know what they'll like to do on holiday. You might think that an aquarium would interest them but you might be surprised to learn that they've outgrown their interest in sea creatures. Ask your teen what he or she would like to do and see. While you may not be able to do exactly what they want you should be able to find something comparable and within your budget no matter the real estate to which they want to travel.

A cruise is another holiday choice that really has something for everyone, including teenagers. There are daily activities that focus on all age groups and interests. Most enjoy having fun in the sun and there are several beach sports and pools both on the ship and at the ports of call. There are also movies, shows, dancing and video games to keep them busy and entertained. The internet is a great resource for researching cruises or check with a travel agent that specializes in cruise holidays.

Whether it's a theme park, rafting trip, cruise or other vacation spot, include your teen in the planning process. Even if they don't end up with their first choice they'll be happy they were involved and will have a more enjoyable time. Keeping them entertained and occupied will mean a better time for the entire family.
